Anyone who's known me for more than 5 years knows that I never used to listen to music. I thought it was dumb. You could hardly ever understand what the singer is saying until you listen to the song eighty times, and I never saw the point in sitting down, not doing anything, and just chilling to music.
The first song I ever liked was "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel. It had a good beat, and it was something you could sing along to, and it was funny. "JFK! Blown away! What else do I have to say?!" It was also the first tape I ever bought - the "We Didn't Start the Fire" single. So while everyone else was listening to Nirvana and Guns'n'Roses, I was jamming to Billy Joel. I don't remember the first CD I ever bought. What I do remember is riding in the car with my friend Jess, and listening to Alice In Chains' Unplugged CD, and I thought it was the most relaxing music ever. (Hehe then a year later I discovered Pink Floyd). I went out and bought the AIC album shortly thereafter, and I remember it being one of my very first CDs. Once I started getting into music, I listened to just about anything rock related. I bought all the staple alternative CDs, like Bush, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, etc.. Then I discovered Metallica. Metallica was the first band I ever really connected with. It's not just their lyrics, it's just the way they construct their songs. They don't follow any standard beats or song structure. They just play. They don't care if their songs are 7 minutes long, just as long as they are good. It was loud, fast, emotional, and played to perfection. During my depression, I discovered industrial music. This is the perfect music to listen to when you're depressed. Contrary to what people think, it doesn't make you feel worse. If anything it makes you feel better because you can identify with the lyrics of the music. Stabbing Westward was and still is my most favorite industrial band. Ever since I heard "Save Yourself," I've been hooked. I've always liked techno. Not as much as heavy metal or industrial, but it's nice when you want to dance. Very recently, I discovered trance, which is a form of techno that gears toward putting you in a trance-like state; hence the name. It's very easy to fall asleep to, work to, or do just about anything to. Paul Oakenfold is in my opinion the best trance artist out there. Rap and R&B just suck. I don't like R&B because it focuses more on the voice of the singer.. I like the music that bands play more then lyrics and vocals. Rap is just to make money. I dislike both because the singers more often than not do not write their own music. I say music here, not lyrics. The sound of a band is what makes me like them, not the lyrics. |
